Thought for the Day
Some people regard private enterprise as a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look on it as a cow they can milk. Not enough people see it as a healthy horse, pulling a sturdy wagon.

Election Time
Now that election time is upon us we have extended our web site to include two new facilities. One is our surveys where we are undertaking a weekly poll on events leading up to the election and any other questions that may arise and the other facility is a forum where anybody may discuss the issues of the day - or any issue at all. These may be found at:
http://www.partiesforgrowth.org.nz/surveys/surveys.cgi
http://www.partiesforgrowth.org.nz/forum/index.php
You can also access these from the headline on our home page. Have a look and help us get these politicians concentrating on the main event - GROWING THE ECONOMY.

In Praise of Disorganized Labor
One of the things that has fascinated me over the years is unionism. I have seen it in action in the Freezing Works where I worked in my holidays and in action in the PPTA when I was a Secondary School teacher.
In my youth and ignorance I thought that unions were a "good thing". But time and experience has taught me to be very suspicious of unions and the motives of union leaders.
What I observe now in New Zealand is that unions seem to be very low key and quietly disappearing from the landscape except for State Sector Unions. Because the government can take tax payers' money and give it to public servants if they join a union we have seen a rise in unionism in the public sector and as a result we have seen strikes occuring for doctors, nurses, teachers and I believe that Sue Bradford's union of unemployed also called a strike but I am not sure what effect it had! All public servants but not the private sector.
This article has a look at recent developments in America and how "market forces" can explain the continuing demise of Unionism in the world.
