Thought for the Day
New Zealand governments have a tendency to micro-manage the country. Since everything they do is dedicated to the task of being elected "next" time the results are somewhat less than optimal.
One only needs to consider; Education (NCEA and Wananga), Prisons (let them out), Health ($3.5bn extra and no improvement), and so on and on. (I can't think of anything that our governments have managed well - can you?)
Their interference in the family has resulted in an ever increasing cycle of malfunctioning families and they still want to micro-manage the way we control our children.
It is time parliament concentrated on:
Defending the shore,
Keeping the peace in the land,
And setting economic parameters for maximum growth.
We would then be a far happier and much more prosperous community.

Praise Be to Tax Competition!
It is interesting to note that there was no income tax in New Zealand before 1900 and that people back then could move freely around the world without needing a passport.
The "Nation State" came to power and prominence in the 20th century but even though we all grew up in this era we should still take time out to imagine other ways of running the world. Some would even say that the Nation State has had its day.
The power of logic and individual enterprise is continually eating away at Nanny State and we are now entering an interesting phase of development; The Nation States are in competition with each other for our services and our money. They may deny this and ingore the consequences but eventually the truth begins to dawn on the powers that be and the leaders must change or lead sad little poor countries.
Our Labour Governments have ignored the consequences of their legislation and regulation for the last six years and forgot that business and the wealth generators of society must work within state control and will always adjust their actions to suit the penalties imposed upon them. So it happens that we are now facing a marked slow down in the economy - Labour has managed to kill off the higher growth era we have been enjoying. According to Nationmaster.com, New Zealand was number 37th in the world wide wealth tables in 2000, climbed to number 35 in 2004 but collapsed to number 38 in 2005.
Thanks to Labour legislation and regulation we are now back on our downward path to the third world.
BUT ALL IS NOT LOST.
The leopard may be changing its spots. Here is a press release from Peter Dunne:
**************************************************
Revenue Minister confirms tax reform well on track.
Revenue Minister Peter Dunne confirmed today that the process of business tax reform, as agreed between Labour and United Future in their confidence and supply agreement, is well underway.
"Some commentators appear to have misinterpreted perfectly accurate remarks made by Finance Minister, Dr Michael Cullen, on Morning Report this morning as meaning that business tax reform has been put in the 'far-distant, too-hard, never-happen' basket.
"One report says the Government will begin a review of the business tax regime this year."
Mr Dunne said "In fact, the review began some months ago and is the subject of ongoing intensive work by officials.
"We are serious about achieving significant tax reform and as Dr Cullen has rightly indicated, this means there is no single silver bullet solution.
"Getting it right will take some time for consultation, legislation and implementation which means an effective date of April 2008 is not unrealistic or evidence of foot-dragging," said Mr Dunne.
*****************************************************
Phew, saved at the bell. Six years ago Australians were 20% better off then Kiwis and now they are 33% better off. At this same rate of improvement they will be 37% better off by Peter Dunne's projected time for tax reform.
If our tax reform is the usual too little too late the Aussies will continue on an ever-increasing growth path as they open up the unions to reality and their markets to the world.
If they continue forging ahead at the current rate they will be 50% better off by 2014 - only 8 years away. This difference in wealth will be a major draw for Kiwis and the "gold rush" to Australia will be unstoppable.
Let us hope that our leaders can do some leading - we deserve it.
Have a look at the attached story for some more thoughts on how the Nation States are having to compete, to our benefit.

Robust or Rigid? The Future Labour Market
The simple answer to the question ‘Does the West know best?’ is no. As is the case with most answers, however, there is more to be said than merely rejecting the proposition out of hand. In fact, nobody knows best. The constant exchange of ideas, experiences and competing beliefs provides a foundation that enables us to learn from each other.
Can we, here in New Zealand, learn from the other countries of the world or are we destined to follow slavishly the ideologies of the past?
Seeking security by resisting change is a long slow death.
