Thought for the Day
We have two types of politicians - the incapable and those capable of anything.

Letters to the DomPost
The Editor,
Dear Sir,
Over the last few years Dr. Cullen has increased taxes, levies and charges, made it more difficult and expensive to employ staff, increased compliance costs, insisted that we can only use the government accident insurance provider (ACC) at whatever cost they decide to charge, increased the size of government and the number of bureaucrats and extended the Resource Management ACT to become an unwieldy monster. Dr. Cullen’s government inflates the economy and the Reserve Bank tries to fix this by increasing the interest rates. This causes exporters to die off and sensible people to buy real estate as a hedge against inflation.
Dr. Cullen now seems surprised that our growth rate is going down and there is considerable danger of a hard landing and a recession. Far from gaining on Australia and moving into the top half of the OECD we are going backwards while the MPs increase their pay packets.
It is time that we required our politicians to pass Economics 101 as a prerequisite for entering parliament.
Yours sincerely,
Phil Scott

Inflation Debate Going Off the Rails
Now, here's a thought:
Only the Reserve Bank can print money. It alone should be held accountable for inflation and inflationary expectations.

Society Needs No Managers
Can politicians really legislate for our happiness and liberty? Should they be trying? Do politicians really know what they are legislating for? Or is it just pressure groups and ideologies?
Genuine liberty is not just another form of government management. It means the absence of government management.

This Time Its Different
Xmas is upon us and I thought that it was time for something a little different. This article contains some interesting thoughts for you all to contemplate as the holiday season works its magic and encases us all in a glow of happiness and feelings of goodwill to all.
The rise of the "platform" companies may bring about the demise of the welfare state. This discussion contains interesting and subtle arguments and also helps to explain why we are going down the World Wide Wealth list.
High tax nation states are on the way out. The next 20 years will be interesting as the forces let loose with globalisation impinge on the centralising power of governments. The new information age which we have started is about to get very interesting.
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.
