Thought for the Day

We must make the building of a free society once more an intellectual adventure, a deed of courage. If we can regain that belief in the power of ideas which was the mark of liberalism at its best, the battle is not lost.

F.A. Hayek

Why Tax Cuts Are Good For Growth

The Hon Dr Michael Cullen, Minister of Finance states, "The claim that cutting taxes leads to higher economic growth is simply not true."

Well, is Dr Cullen correct or not? Our Labour government has the stated aim of getting us into the top half of the OECD with their strategy for Economic Transformation. So far they have only managed to shift our economic growth from the 3% to 5% range down to 1% or 2% and it is only that high because central government is in growth mode - 10% last quarter!

We are suffering Economic Transformation alright. It is just that it is in the wrong direction.

Litigate or Liquidate

There has been a lot of talk recently about corruption and quite apart from the damaging moral aspects we are concerned that corruption also reduces economic growth. For maximum economic growth we need to have absolute and cast iron property rights. These too seem to be coming under question in New Zealand. Government regulation can transfer ownership of "historic" entities from you to the State. We saw the case recently of a Kowhai tree being cut down. The real owner thought that it was his tree, after all he had paid for it as part of the property he bought, but he found to his cost that the State "owned" the tree and extracted its pound of flesh. So much for property rights.

It can also happen to large organisations as Telecom found recently. How many billions did the State wiped off the value of that company?

Farmers' property rights have been under seige and the list goes on. So many government regulations reduce your rights to your property. We must jealously guard the property rights that our forefathers have fought and died for over the centuries. We cannot allow "The State" to play fast and loose with property rights. If we do then we will all lose.

Here is an interesting article about corruption and property rights and justice systems in some other parts of the world.

Let us hope that we do not go further in this direction. Loss of property rights will only reduce our economic growth.
