Thought for the Day
And here is a quote for our current Political Parties and the incumbent politicians to ponder; How many of them are like Groucho?
"Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others."
Groucho Marx

The Meltdown of the German Welfare State
Helen has as her government's stated aim to raise our economy into the top half of the OECD. Unfortunately she neglected to specify a time frame for this feat so we are left guessing. Perhaps she expects to be in power for the next decade or so. If that is the case then her wish may be granted!
The trick will be to keep New Zealand "No worse off than she found it" while her favourite countries France and Germany sink down the table taking Italy with them. (Italy is currently in recession.)
This continual comparison with OECD countries is now outdated. The rest of the world is moving on, some of them are now catching up with us and, would you believe it, some of the bounders have even started to surpass the OECD countries.
This is a good thing.
But it means that we need to stop comparing our progress with the OECD and start looking at all the countries in the world and see how we compare with them. Maybe we are catching up with a few sclerotic old Europeans but we are falling behind a growing number of new world countries.
We are part of an ever changing world scene and economic forces are universal. We are currently at number 21 in the OECD and 35 for the whole world. Who can these interlopers be and who let them grow wealthy? Who indeed?
Frank Vogelgesang takes a look at Germany and gives us an interesting insight into the socialists in power and the problems they are having keeping the ship of state afloat. He makes an interesting point about the far left and the far right meeting at the far side of the political circle where both factions move towards more and more government control. When it is all boiled down, there is little difference between a fascist state and a socialist one; Both become a dictatorship with command and control from the centre. Muldoon took us way down the Command and Control path and the Lange government had to rescue us from a parlous economic situation. Will the Clark government get a chance to take us down the same Muldoon path?
We will have some idea on the 18th of September.

Letters to the DomPost
We continue with writing letters to the Editor about the necessity of maintaining economic growth at a high rate. Business confidence is way down (DomPost 23rd July) and with no let up on tax increases, stifling regulations and the continual increase in the government bureaucracy (just how many policy analysts do we need?) we expect that our growth rate will decrease sharply next year.
This is most unfortunate. Are we really going back to the dim dark days of the Muldoon command and control economic system. We all know how that ended with a price freeze, a wages freeze, an interest rate freeze and when we were totally frozen over he called a snap election.
Muldoon's apocryphal comment to Lange was; "Good luck. You'll need it, I've spent the lot!"
