Thought for the Day

It was Ronald Reagan who said, "Government is not a solution to our problem, government is the problem." He could have been talking about New Zealand.

Incidently, this is the same Ronald Reagan who, against all advice, lowered the tax rates in America and saw the tax take increase. When tax is low and non-distortionary then everyone just pays their share. When governments get into the act the tax system becomes very complex and people game the system to avoid paying too much tax. What a waste of effort!

The old USSR had 100% tax and a disastrous economy. New Russia has a tax rate of 13% and a booming economy.

Come on Michael, be brave!

The Real Cause of Blackouts

Our government runs the Health system and the Education system and the Prison system and our Roading system. I am really really pleased that the government is not running our Food system. Private enterprise seems to be doing a fabulous job of providing everyone with a vast array of cheap or expensive, plain or fancy food on a 24/7 basis. Could the government do this?

Pity about the government running our electricity system. Governments past and present and everywhere find that they cannot do as well as the private sector.

Lew Rockwell has a look at the Electrical Supply system in the good ol' USA and draws some interesting conclusions. We have a lot to learn about what governments should and should not do.

Principles Of Inequality

Men are made by nature unequal. Surely, to assure social peace, all men must be equal before the law and have an equal right to the protection of the law. But they do not have equal ability and productivity and, therefore, do not have equal incomes. A political order that endeavors to create economic equality by force is unnatural; it is destined to self-destruct in destitution, discord, and strife.

Strong words from Dr. Sennholz. Is this our destiny?
