Thought for the Day
We are now spending $3,000,000,000 more per year on health than we were in 1999. I had a hernia fixed recently for $6000 and cataracts cost about $3000 to fix. A heart operation might cost $20,000 and up, but many operations are straight forward with one day in hospital.
If the average operation costs $6000 then the $3bn extra we pay the government system would buy around 500,000 operations per year.
We spend an extra $3bn for no discernable improvement in the government system and 500,000 people languish (and some die) on a waiting system when the private hospital system would fix them all within one year.
Are we all mad? Has "God's Own" become Alice's Wonderland?
How can we get growth into the economy with this sort of waste going on?

Evidence vs. Beliefs
I have noticed over my life-time that when I have had discussions about religion or politics that people either agree that I am a very astute and intelligent fellow or they berate me for my apalling ignorance and stupidity and advise me to do some serious thinking and get my "facts" straight.
I freely admit that I am not an economist and that I am seriously ignorant of many political matters.
This newsletter is written from the point of view that economic growth provides many benefits to the people in a country and to the workers on a lower wage in particular.
A billion Chinese people seem to agree with me!
I also observe that the wealthy countries can afford to do more for their citizens than the poorer countries. I thus conclude that I should expend some effort persuading politicians that economic growth is a good thing and that they should all be following policies that enhance economic growth.
Unfortunately, politicians do not seem to argue from the basis of logic but from their preconceived ideas. They are not any different from you or I in this regard!
This interesting article helps to explain this human trait and why I always leap to the defence of my basic opinions rather than opting to listen and learn.
This article may cause you to think about our education system as it is currently being changed. Are our children being "hard-wired" to believe socialist ideals?
But the question remains - What do we do about it?

Perspectives - On Tax
One of the most interesting things about our period of history is that we do not just need to argue different economic theories in the hypothetical arena. We are able to look around the world and examine different countries which have implemented these theories so that we have a number of practical examples to look at.
One of the big questions which (naturally) interests us all is the question of tax. What is best? This discussion shows that a number of countries have discovered that the old tax regimes were not working and have adopted some of the new theories. This is having dramatic and positive results for these nations and is leading to competition between Nation States as they seek to enhance their wealth and secure their future.
"Old" Europe is struggling with sagging economies as the recent strikes in France show, while "New" Europe is booming.
Is Helen's plan to follow France to the top half of the OECD still viable? Or will France follow us to the bottom of the wealth tables?
