Thought for the Day
Political thinking consists in deciding on the conclusion first and then finding good arguments for it. An open mind is considered irresponsible - and perhaps it really is.
Richard Crossman
British Politician, The Crossman Diaries 1979.

The World Economy - Restoring the Balance
World GDP growth has been doing very well for the last three years. The percentage increase on a year earlier on a quarter by quarter basis and starting in mid-2002 has been 3.4%, 3.2%, 3.5%, 2.8%, 3.8%, 4.6%, 5.3%, 5.4%, 4.6%, 4.4%, 4.1%, and 3.8% for this latest quarter. This is an average growth rate for the world GDP for the last three years of just over 4%.
When we look at New Zealand's record in this light we are growing at about the average for the 52 countries who represent 90% of world GDP.
Our recent remarkable growth rate is not so remarkable after all. Next year it is forecast to diminish to 1% - more or less. How is the world growth rate looking?

MMP Means Much More Paralysis
MMP Means Much More Paralysis
"Predicting the outcome of New Zealand elections is particularly hazardous because it has the most absurd electoral system of any Western democracy, including Tasmania and the ACT."
Yeah, right.

Recycling: What a Waste!
I like the Green Bin system. Someone deposits screeds of paper into my letter box and I throw it into the Green Bin. Marvellous! It is also very good at swallowing up my old beer bottles. I don't know how much it costs compared with the Yellow Bag system but the price is mmmmuuuucccchhhh less. In fact the Green Bin is Free.
Now let me see. How much other rubbish can I put in the Green Bin instead of the Yellow Bag?
Ain't Greeny sustainable economics great?!?!
