Treasury Growth Predictions
The latest economic forecasts from Treasury are rather concerning as they show significant reductions in real GDP per capita over the next few years.

The change for 2003 was 2.8% which is approaching our target of 3% to 4%. If we could keep our growth at this pace we would get the steady rise in the world wide wealth table that we need for a first world standard of living.

However, the projections for the next few years indicate growth of about half of what we need. They project 1.6% for 2004, 1.6% for 2005 and 1.5% for 2006 with some improvement after that. This takes us back to mediocre again!

These forecasts also assume no disasters or dramatic changes in the world economy. With the American economy running at extreme debt levels in consumer and government circles and the "recovery" being rather fragile I think we can expect some fallout from this direction.

The Chinese are also trying to slow their economy as they are not sure they can keep control of the current frenetic pace. Some people would argue that there is some prospect of the Chinese finding a hard landing if the government is not extremely careful.

We need an anssurance from Michael Cullen that he has a strategy to overcome this halving of our growth rate. Or could it be that his current strategy is causing Treasury to make these projections?

Getting Up The OECD Rankings
This speech by Roger Kerr to the NZ Institute of Management is well worth reading. Here are his thoughts on what steps we need to take if we are to achieve our goal of getting into the top half of the OECD in the forseeable future. The only way we will get there is if we can find enough politicians who really believe in growth and who are prepared to do the "hard yards". Write to your MP and ask them what they are prepared to do. Sooner or later they are going to get the message! Visit Website ]
