The Tragedy Of The Commons One of the big problems with property rights is that most people assume that this means greedy people get rich and deprive the rest of us any enjoyment of that property. The real problem is one that has been recognised ever since people were allowed to use the "common" ground in England. This common ground was owned by the Crown not any one person. The result was that nobody ever did anything to improve the land. Nearby farms and villages became wealthy and had attractive and well tended land while the commons remained barren and useless. Socialists don't want anybody to own the land. They think private property is a bad idea. However it is interesting to see that where private property rights are enforced they can lead to increases in forest cover. Human nature is a wonderful thing. Perhaps we should spend more effort understanding how it works and allowing for this when we think about our environment. May 14, 2007, 18:29
